Better Protection and Support for Professionals
Through Engagement and Transparency!
Through Engagement and Transparency!
My top three priorities:
Improve Openness, Transparency, and Fiscal Responsibility:
Implement a freeze on membership fees while improving transparency and accountability in Union operations, including on how senior non-elected officers are selected and how the decision to support the vaccination mandate was made, which resulted in denial of support for members who questioned the reasonableness of these mandates.
Address Political and Industrial Interference in the Workplace:
Protect professionals, especially those in health products, policies, and regulation, whose fearless advice is critical to all Canadians but who experience one of the highest levels of fear of reprisal in the Public Service, according to the Public Service Employer Survey.
Increase Support for the Most Vulnerable Union Members:
Prioritize support for members in contract and short-term positions, those who experience fear of reprisal, and those impacted by the pandemic and its related measures.
Specific issues I want to address:
Support for all union members: Advocate on core labour issues, regardless of background or political preferences, and address challenges faced by those in contract and term positions.
Balanced approach to office return and remote work: Push for balanced actions and messaging related to Return to Office and Working from Home, ensuring it garners support not only from public service workers but also from the broader public.
Freeze on union membership dues: Support a freeze on union membership dues until fiscal and operational transparency and accountability measures are sufficiently established.
Assistance for members with family needs: Provide support to members with special family situations, including those with large families or elderly relatives requiring care.
Protection and attraction of subject matter experts: Safeguard SMEs with additional protections, especially for those in government policy and market product evaluation units, while also offering incentives for veteran SMEs and considering reclassification over the elimination of "double bars."
Transparency and timeliness in union communications: Ensure timely and full transparency in the union’s messaging and actions on key government policies, decisions, and narratives affecting Canadians (e.g., lockdowns, masking, vaccination mandates).
Fostering inclusivity and dialogue: Promote a culture of dialogue and inclusivity by expanding the union’s Equity Statement to cover discrimination based on cultural and educational backgrounds, as well as dietary and medical preferences.
Religious and spiritual inclusivity: Revise union messaging on religious diversity to include non-scriptural spiritual practices, such as First Nations ways of living, karmic laws, and other conscience-based beliefs not tied to organized religions.
Member engagement and open dialogue: Address member disengagement by hosting town halls and group meetings, providing safe and professional spaces for discussing divisive issues.
Collaboration with other unions: Partner with unions like Canadian Association of Professional Employees (CAPE) to protect public sector professionals and ensure their ability to provide Fearless Professional Advice.
Escalate the vaccination mandate grievance: Push for updates on the vaccination mandate policy grievance filed over two years ago, along with related grievances currently in abeyance.
No more mandates: Proactively engage with members to prevent the imposition of politically motivated mandates, ensuring decisions are grounded in scientific evidence and professional integrity rather than political agendas.
